cannot model anything
nothing like agile

video

http://www.archive.org/details/Drupal_and_PHP_5_OOP

considerable angst about OO, arguments against it seem defensive.

"Drupal has gotten a long way without using objects"

"Can't fix OO framework" - can hack procedural

resolve with tricks like interception / aspect - end up with drupal

"for the first time" design specification for drupal 7, implement in drupal 8

29:00 - building scaffolding on arrays

34:00 "drop from OO to drupal is small" ... uh.. is Drupal chx? very discouraging comments exclusively, overly defensive. it's just another developed approach.

36:00 take parts and make them OO

43:50 hidding backend changes

provides a lot of support for objects, with regard for areas oo doesn't provide answers (eg menus)

seems more a matter of "when."

a) OOP is only so natural for those who goes through CS courses.

there's a reason to use OO - larger scale systems

overdone - basic concepts are logical and easier to learn than made-up ways.

b) OOP is more rigid. If you fuck up there is no way out

workalikes for db abstraction, NIH

type hinting

OO - develop concrete idea of model and services. drupal - not.

attitude "assume caller is intelligent" - changing code, late nights. no way to design something. why wouldnt you make it totally robust?

Views/Panels already use OO classes.

Core doesn't.

Provide an OO discovery method so classes can support unit-tested OO classses

Not a conversion.

Wordpress is like Barbie's Kitchen. You get a kit that lets you do what it shows on the box... blogs, RSS feeds, blog management, with extensions you can create maps, events, and so on.

[http://www.semantic-mediawiki.org Semantic Mediawiki] (SMW) is like Lego blocks. You can combine the basic blocks to make just about any shape, with extensions you can create your own content types, special views and functions.

Wordpress is easier to use (except when it comes to quick hypertext editing, where wikis, after a quick introduction, rule). But with SMW, you can recreate most typical functions, and also recombine pieces. You can take the pieces of a "table" (a map location embedded in a page) and make a mosaic (a collection of map locations about a topic). The SMW approach is less rounded, but you can re-use the pieces and constantly build on your knowledge.

This is a characteristic of semantic sites. Each piece of content is well defined and re-usable. Also like Lego blocks, the design is evident, transparent and open (in SMW, using [[Special:Version]] and change histories).

Wordpress supports some semantic features now, but I prefer the "Lego" approach, where people can more easily create different components, without resorting to a complex and difficult to maintain low level language.

There is more and more re-usable content and components on the Web; [http://simile.mit.edu MIT's SIMILE project] was created to make it easy to embed interactive views across sites and is supported by SMW and Wordpress, Microformats and RDFa make it possible to aggregate content in one place, whether it's restaurant reviews or departmental budgets.

SMW can support these functions for any site user, in a culture of transparently exchanging knowledge, but users have to learn the markup, which at times is not easy. A SMW site is best represented by a collection of people, some of whom are expert helpers.

</div>

Excellent point you are making. As a Newfoundlander I have been exposed to the issue for awhile. Newfoundland and Labrador got a very bad deal when it negotiated the Upper Churchill River, Labrador hydro deal back in the 1960s. No one knew the cost of energy would sky rocket and we did not get the needed financial help from Ottawa. I am not blaming Quebec, they negotiated a good deal for them and Hydro Quebec engineers helped to make it all possible.

The new Lower Churchill proposal is looking at what is known as the 'Anglo-Saxon route'. It would transport power to the island of Newfoundland by underwater cable and from there to Nova Scotia by cable. It would be expensive but with good markets and high energy costs in the Maritimes, Ontario, and the Northeastern US it would be quite feasible.

Of course this would only be done if a deal could not be worked out with Quebec.
from http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20080507.wlchefvij07/BNStory/lifeFoodWine/home

WHAT YOU NEED

2 medium eggplants (about 2 pounds)

3 medium to large semi-ripe papayas (about 21/4 pounds)

1/2 cup canola oil

2 very large onions, in 11/2-inch dice (about 11/2 pounds)

3 large ripened tomatoes, in 11/2-inch dice (1 pound)

11/2 tablespoons ground cumin

1/2 teaspoon turmeric

1 teaspoon ground fenugreek seeds

1 large jalapeno pepper, chopped

11/2 tablespoons salt

2 cups black chickpea curry

1 cup chopped cilantro

11/2 teaspoons dried mint leaves (optional)

WHAT YOU DO

Preheat the oven to 450 F. Wrap eggplants and papayas individually in aluminum foil. Place them on a baking tray. Since the papayas will cook faster, place them in the front so you can easily remove them from the oven. Bake papayas for 30 minutes, then remove from the oven and allow them to cool. Continue baking eggplants for one hour more or until they are very soft. The eggplants will become mushy and deflated. Remove eggplants from the oven and cool so you can unwrap the aluminum foil.

Using a vegetable peeler or paring knife, peel papayas and discard the skin. Cut papayas in half. With a spoon, scoop out seeds and discard. Purée papaya flesh in a food processor or finely mash with your hands.

Using a paring knife, peel skins off eggplants. Using a spoon, scrape off any eggplant stuck to the skins. Discard the skins. Coarsely chop eggplants and place in a mixing bowl, then, using your hands, roughly mash the eggplants. They will have nowhere near the smooth consistency of mashed potatoes; instead, there will be some chunks. (You can also place the whole eggplants on a large cutting board and dice them into ¼- to ½-inch pieces.)

Add the papaya purée to the eggplants and mix well. Set aside.

Heat oil in a large heavy frying pan on medium-high heat for one minute. Add onions and sauté until brown, about 15 minutes. Reduce the heat to medium and stir in tomatoes. Add cumin, turmeric, fenugreek, jalapeno pepper and salt. Cook for 10 minutes. Pour the eggplant and papaya mixture into the masala and stir well. Combine the eggplant and papaya curry with the black chickpea curry and heat on medium for five to 10 minutes or until the mixture is gently boiling. Stir in the chopped cilantro just as you turn off the heat.

Present this curry on six plates with chapatis. Sprinkle with dried mint.

Serves 6 to 8
BT-CD110 bluetooth data logger.

== Brief review ==

Nice little unit. Battery life is great, well over the advertised 22 hours using stanby and motion detection (!), though there's no way to know what the current battery level is at, it will say "Low power" for the last hour of battery life. The voice feature was a surprise to me, I thought I'd be dependant on the merry blinking lights. Some of the sounds are kind of obnoxious (and it's kind of bizarre to have "satellite fix" come out of your pocket at random times).

In terms of getting a signal, it was a bit of a mystery, sometimes I couldn't get one after standing in a clear space, sometimes it'd lock on while in my pocket in the middle of the city.
AGPS (assisted GPS, using mobile networks) would probably be much better, but require a different kind of device.

The included utilities for setup and downloading data are basic but work fine, including export to Google Earth format (of course, the actual data isn't exactly complex, so it's easy to do whatever transforming is required). It would have been nice to get ahold of an immediate GPS mapping app, but since I don't plan to run Windows going forward the only option is Google Earth, which is an extra expense option I'll consider paying for if nothing appears soon (ironically I paid for Google Earth when it was owned by Keyhole, Google immediately bought it and my subscription became worthless when they released it for free).

It would have been much nicer to have a GPS device that also included a display, but that would have been much larger, had much shorter battery life, cost a lot more for a device that will be shortly obsolete as there is so much happening in GPS, and would have required paying and managing maps for each new region. This $120 device is a good solution for simple logging.

I had [[Travel_gadgets_2007 | considered]] the Locotech BGT-11 / Amaryllo Trip Tracker because there is more third party software and it's waterproof/floats, but it is a larger unit with shorter battery life, and the battery is non replaceable and apparently stops working if it goes flat. The BT-CD110 uses a commonly used replaceable battery.

[[2007 GPS experience]]

== Issues ==

=== included driver isn't Vista compatible ===

The setup program thinks I am running Windows 2000 and am missing service pack 4, and the auto discover driver fails with "BT + GPS + DATA LOG - The system cannot find the file specified."

- fixed with an updated driver.

=== Bluetooth with utilities ===

Regarding Bluetooth, the device connects as "BT GPS" and shows up as COM3 (outgoing) / COM4 (incoming). When I use the basic "Set Data Log" utility, I either see "Cannot open COM3" or "Device can not into update mode, please try again." (grammar verbatim).

- have to use USB with these utilities.

== Compatible software ==

=== Google Earth ===

- Exporting (via Data Log utility) to Google Earth's kmz works.
May 26, sent email to Panasonic Global to inquire about getting Japanese purchased LC1 repaired from Canada.

May 27, received response from Panasonic (LumixConcierge@ca), they sent me to

Professional Electronics
5810 Ambler Drive Unit #10
Mississauga ON
Canada
Phone: 905 625-6638
Fax: 905 625-8199
Email: jcasino, professionalelectronics.ca

Looks like the camera was affected by this defect:

http://www.photoaxe.com/panasonic-lc1-malfunctions/

<blockquote>After the notice about Nikon malfunctions last week, now comes the time for the Japanese company Panasonic to anounce CCD performance defects with the Lumix DMC-LC1. In the press release, Panasonic tells us that is offering repair service for domestic Japanese LC1 models, but has not released details about service for other areas.</blockquote>

also discussed here:

http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/digital-forum/29902-panasonic-dmc-lc1-problem-help.html

<blockquote>I just got mine back from Panasonic two weeks ago. My sensor had gone black (died) back in November 2006 and I had told them a few times that Leica replaced such sensors for free as it is a Sony sensor error.<br />

Finally, Panasonic told them they replaced those on warranty. And they did (here in Denmark). So try if it is possible. Sounds to me Panasonic just recently, like three weeks ago, told their repair houses to repair these on warranty.</blockquote>

June 23, 2008

We sent it to a repair shop in Montreal, who charged us a $45 estimate and said it would cost $650 to fix. Then we found this:

http://www.panasonic.ca/english/customercare/notice2.asp

Called Panasonic (spoke to Scott), they said they will repair it for free, and reimburse our estimate. Nice! They sent us to Acadian electronic in Montreal.
== Critisisms of Drupal ==

I would call Drupal the software I love to hate, but it's more simply the software I hate. In my peer group I seem to be in the minority for loving the rigour of Java based systems, which I think is completely appropriate for any system that is meant to be constantly built on and redesigned over long periods of time. Systems based on fine grained standard components are easy to build on, robust, and provide all the customization you could wish for.

Unfortunately Drupal has caught on with my typical client, the smaller non profits who can't depend on an IT department. So I'll try to constructively criticize it here. I would love for this list to become completely outdated as Drupal tackles these problems. All of them have been mentioned as "to dos" by the Drupal "executive" for several major versions, with no progress.

No data model or high level API - api.drupal.org is documentation, not an api. When the top-down API changes, code just breaks, often without warning. Manipulating "entities" using array references and text symbols is a one way ticket to hair-pulling debugging, bad quality data, and porting pain. It inherently creates queries that are incredibly complex the kind thing models and APIs were designed to solve, but can't be used with Drupal. So code is built that the developers themselves barely understand, is inefficient and difficult to build on.

As an example, a project I'm working on with a university was originally, after some angst, targeted for Drupal 6.x. After some months of work, it was decided to switch back to Drupal 5.x, even though t's not the current version, because some key modules don't yet work with Drupal 6.x. But guess what, by the time the project is done, Drupal 7.x is likely to be out. So, because of the drawbacks of PHP and Drupal, nothing is compatible, resulting in a littered field of abandon ware, outdated documentation, things that half work. This isn't how Java projects work.

Of course, Drupallers think working with this kind of code is high-tech, but it's really macabre.

No relational support. With CCK (which is a reinvention of what a real CMS is, though it has the most interesting potential), this is amplified. Data integrity is out the door, and you have to reverse engineer your own designs.

And most of all the disingenuousness, the intellectual dishonesty of the lead developers. They are happy to sit back while Drupal is covered with acclaim, when most of them are pretty hardcore and know about the real problems and lack of design, the fact that Drupal basically builds on arbitrary hooks, switches, massive use of arbitrary text for logic, and entity design that are all gigantic steps back from what solid programming tools provide. There isn't a piece of documentation that isn't filled with superlatives, yet in reality decades old wheels are being reinvented with more attention to hype than care. And for some reason many Drupal mid level developers act as uncritical apologists, though if you search at all you can find endless posts inquiring about incompatible versions and the many hacks required to get normal things done.

[[Drupal OO Discussion]]

http://www.inertweb.com/2008/12/21/how-i-learned-love-drupal - a fair article that's "for" Drupal. Though he still completely glosses over all the advantages of using decades of well designed software in favour of something that always does things its own way.

I am writing because I am very confused by Fido's plans and have been trying to resolve a dispute. Please excuse my long note. But I would like to be assured a senior person will look at my issue.

I have been a Fido customer for about ten years, minus a brief gap when I travelled out of the country. I would estimate I have spent about $7 - $10k over the years on my two lines. I am a software developer working in the hospital system and develop mobile applications, so finding a good mobile carrier is very important to me.

I have not been a contract customer, rather going month to month. Fido over time has called me to offer incentives to go to a multi year plan, including free high end Windows Mobile devices. However, none were better than what I can purchase elsewhere, so did not interest me.

I accumulated 360 Fido dollars, and wanted to get an iPhone for my partner, which required signing up for a 3 year plan for her. I went into your flagship Montreal store. The sales person was helpful, but my thoughts about what I could with plans turned out totally wrong. I was in the store for two hours and it was very frustrating, and I ended up settling for what was not at all the preferred solution.

*I would have liked to purchase the iPhone for her, and keep using my current phone, a Nokia n95 (sold by Rogers), with the opportunity to upgrade my phone within the next year.* This was refused to me, and beyond that, I was forced to choose one of your phones. I was told I had to take this phone in order to utilise the unlimited surfing plan with my n95. This makes absolutely no sense to me, why would you make a customer, who already has a device they are happy with, take another phone they don't want to own? It makes no sense for Fido, myself, the environment, it is Kafka-esque. I am sure it is a case of a policy being followed by employees without any real chance for thought.

As I said, I have spent $7 - $10 000 at Fido, and I will be spending at least another $6 000 over the next three years if this can be worked out to my satisfaction. I do not understand why Fido, instead of forcing me to take a phone I do not want, cannot give me an opportunity to upgrade one of my lines in the next year. Surely Fido can see the value of a customer having reasonable flexibility while you're earning $6k of revenue.

The second best solution would be for me to use this forced purchased to buy an iPhone, but to use it on its own as an iPod/basic phone, and continue to use my n95 with Fido.

The third best solution would be for my girlfriend to go on her own phone line, and for me to stay month to month, with my n95 and the $15 value pack.

I would like to receive a response stating at the minimum a senior person has read and understood what I have had to go through, but it would be really nice if we could come to a more amenable, friendly solution for a dedicated customer.

== Software problems ==

=== Time zone problems ===

If not in Eastern time zone, your Android may use the wrong time in SMS messages -

Solution: May be resolved by resetting device. Rogers' suggestion is to revert to 2G????

See: http://www.androidincanada.ca/news/rogers-htc-devices-time-stamp-problem/

=== Using different ROM versions ===

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532419 - how to root (and use different ROMs) for the Rogers Dream (and Magic).

"Official" support is still an issue, individuals are forced to operate in a grey zone (eg if features for rooted phones require support Rogers support, such as visual voicemail type systems),although Rogers has stated any device can be used with their voice/data plans.

=== Enabling the soft keyboard ===

For some reason Rogers did not enable the soft keyboard on the Dream.

Solution

http://www.androidincanada.ca/news/how-to-enable-soft-keyboard-on-rogers-htc-dream/ (from http://androidforums.com/android-applications/5682-rogers-htc-dream-apps-w-soft-keyboards.html )

=== Paid apps not available in Canada ===
I bought the phone mainly to develop mobile applications for sale. I have to bring it back since Rogers is blocking the sale on Android Market.

=== Adoption rate in Canada ===

With the hype and consumer focus of iPhone and Pre, not many Android devices may have been sold by Rogers. This leads to a situation where consumers don't have much influence on the provider. The device being "open source" is a mitigation, and Rogers has used the word "open" in their promotion, though it is unclear the degree third party firmware versions and enhancements will be supported or tolerated.

== Hardware problems ==

=== Camera quality ===

Although the camera is 3.2mp autofocus, the quality is very low. Images have poor contrast, colour quality, and low light performance is non existent. Focus problems can be to some degree resolved using SnapPhoto. SnapPhoto is available in a basic free version, and a $0.99 "Pro" version (not available in Canada yet).

=== Headphone adapter ===

The HTC devices require a USB to 3.5mm adapter for headphones. It does come with a mic and in-ear headphone set. Third party headphone or headphone + USB charging ports are available, but they're dangly and another thing to forget. Another option is to use A2DP Bluetooth stereo, but it's another battery to charge and audio dropout problems are reported.

=== Poor battery life ===

Several 2200/2300mah third party batteries are available. Unfortunately, this makes the device rather [http://www.fommy.com/view-full-page.asp?skuno=82277 clunky], and most skins and cases will not fit. At least we can swap the battery. ;)

http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f41/anyone-used-the-cameron-sino-2200mah-battery-18439/ - "50 hours continual use before battery died in first cycle. Heavy browser use, light calling and text, medium GPS/Maps, games."

=== No light sensor ===

Since there's no light sensor, the user must manually switch between low backlight (battery preservation) and bright (use in sunlight). The best solution is an app such as [http://www.androidandme.com/2009/05/guides/creating-custom-rules-with-toggle-settings-for-android/ Toggle Settings] to switch between different hardware profiles.
Rogers made a vow to open up their support to 'social media' and post any reasonable comment. This is a very progressive position, but some comments don't seem to be making it through the moderation queue.

'''Some of these have been eventually posted''', after the conversation had died down. A few were called off topic.

This is more of a hobbie these days, every once in a while a Rogers moderator replies in a sympathetic tone, but situation is clear.

In response to someone asking why people are holding Rogers responsible for two month delays of devices:

<blockquote>We are holding them responsible because we are stuck buying our handsets from them. Clearly, Rogers doesn’t have the clout many other carriers do. Rogers has had to delay their Galaxy S launch until mid October, here in NYC they are having a buy one, get one free promotion. What would be the best solution? Making it reasonable for us to buy our own handsets on the free market, without paying double the cost for the obligatory subsidy fee. Why is the market stuck on subsidized handsets anyway? I haven’t needed to have anything subsidized since I was a teenager. So, yes, this is the fault of the carriers, and if there were a free market for handsets the situation would be much better.</blockquote>

Posted Sep 28, 2010 - posted nearly immediately. Clearly they don't expect people to get behind this solution.

<blockquote>I am in the states and couldn’t help but notice there is a [http://zooid.org/~vid/roger.jpg promotion for the Galaxy S from one carrier — buy one get one free]. Doesn’t sound like much of a ‘manufacturing delay’ to me.<br />I cannot say I am disappointed with Rogers as my expectations are low. I used to characterize myself as a victim, now I’m past that, lying on the ground with an arrow in my back, totally beaten down without any hope of any sensible plan in this world of entertainment handsets when I need a professional one (Android with keyboard), and contests when I just want fair pricing and terms. Which I’ve articulated numerous times and it just makes sense, including in the face of this “manufacturing delay” — let me buy my own handset on the free market, and offer me an unsubsidized plan. Sound fair? Yeah I know it does, but I also know I can take my ideas to that subterranean fiery place so you can focus on people looking for the shiny.<br />I hope you hear me moderator and I can cry on your shoulder, because I can’t expect much else and for my two smartphone lines ($2400 a year) I’m certainly buying you dinner.
I realize (and it’s clear from the inclusion of statistics) that Rogers doesn’t need to focus on what any individual wants. But I don’t want just first run movies, trendy sports and series in an exclusive community, I want world scale choice and pricing with the knowledge and chaos of the Internet. I have yet to see any Rogers promotions that have been aimed at me, aside maybe from the initial “open,” “revolution” Android ads, which unfortunately proved rather false. While I am not included in “nearly 60 per cent of 18-34 year-old,” I am pretty sure the majority of people would simply like Roger to provide reliable, fast, competitive Internet service so we can choose from a global palette of options. Rogers should certainly participate in extra offerings, but not to the detriment to the bigger idea.
Below not posted but they posted a more controversial post wit some back and forth:

I think you missed one point:

- Rogers wanted to head off any customers thinking of going to Bell for this device

However, if Rogers doesn’t literally *release* this device in “weeks” as they stated, they’re being dishonest.

By the way, I’d made similar points about the Samsung Galaxy S captivate coming soon to Rogers in another post that never made it here, perhaps something about it was considered “offtopic” *cough* unsubsidized plans with consumers buying and controlling their handset of choice on the open market *cough*

Alan - let me assure you, you don't need to step in and apologize on behalf of corporations. There's nothing, anywhere that says "consumer phones are meant to be locked down." That's more tenuous than Rogers' statement that their offering would be a "revolution" and "open." A statement that some of us would like them to follow up on, rather than making excuses on their behalf that accepts a dysfunctional status quo.

I have no desire to own the Nexus One as I want a keyboard device. Further, the formula doesn't make sense, since I'd be continuing to pay monthly subsidization fees to Rogers, effectively nearly paying double for my handset.

Please, unless you're going to say something useful, next time keep your thoughts to yourself. ;)
== Rogers self-service on demand: How-to videos, cheat sheets and FAQs ==

I'm still waiting to see my post from several days ago asking how to self serve purchase a new handset less than three years after my current one. In an age of fast moving (especially the first generation — Dream/Magic — which most quickly became outdated), ever lower priced standard handsets, this is obviously something many people will want to do. Alternatively, what price discounts can we expect if we don't obtain a 'subsidized' handset from Rogers?
== How @RogersHelps helps: Improving the customer experience 140 characters at a time ==

Is @RogersHelp going to do anything if my smartphone is stolen except explain I have to break my contract (around $300), create a new three year contract, and buy a new device (around $600) ?

I’d like to see Rogers simply offer replacement devices at a pro rated cost. If you say the device is worth $600, and it’s $200 up front, and you’re claiming I’m subsidizing the remainder over 36 months, I should be able to get a replacement for $332 after one year. That’s about what I’d pay to break the contract alone. Does this not sound fair to anyone?

And it does imply that those who get their own smartphone should be paying $11 less a month…

----

(in addendum to above)

In case my comment isn't clear, let me explain...

A few months ago my wife's iPhone was stolen. It's from Fido, but please hold off on the Fido-isn't-Rogers macro, I think the story would be the same.

I called customer service and explained the situation. The rep I spoke to sounded like she'd never heard of anyone losing their phone before, as if everyone simply had their phones for three years and this was a very special circumstance. Her first proposal was crazy. We'd have to break the phone and data contracts, and lose our existing phone number. We'd have to buy a new iPhone for $600, including a $35 signup fee and lose our FidoDollars. Pretty much $1000. After three phone calls, we finally got it so we'd only need to cancel one plan for a $125 fee, not pay a signup fee, and pay $600 for a new phone, and use our FidoDollars to pay for most of that (thank goodness for Fido Dollars).

When I got the bill, it seems we were charged $300 for cancelling, but by then I was so damned tired of arguing and confused by all the different options I gave up. I sincerely hope that wasn't part of the plan.

What I'd like to see Rogers do is go for a simple, Really Real Reality option where for any reason I can sign on to MyAccount, click a button on the phone I want, and it will tell me how much I'll pay and/or how much my contract will be extended, given the system knows the terms of my account. This will eliminate all the confusion, including the unfairness associated with special deals people sometimes seem to get, and avoid the confusion that often ensues when speaking with a rep

== RedBoard @ one month: How are we doing? ==

Rogers is making a brave and smart move with this service, hopefully toward getting to the bottom of what we all want, healthy competitive service focused on true Internet access, with worthwhile Rogers offers layered on top. Many homes are, like mine, spending around $8000 over three years on Rogers wireless. For this price we should expect quite a bit. [Rogers is in a tough position because Internet is something that could and should be freely distributed]

With social media comes the hope relationships can be formed. Even if we don't remember a name or avatar, history is just a click away and hopefully we can avoid seeing unhelpful canned responses, and this can be more of a conversation, and less disassociated blips.

I have been continually promoting a few themes —

* Rogers [and HTC] made a mistake with the Dream's inability to upgrade and the Magic offer was not an adequate response [for many Dream purchasers]
* customers should be able to more easily replace or upgrade devices purchased through Rogers without having to go through bizarre 'contract cancellation' contortions. ideally, within a few clicks through their myRogers account
* It's good Rogers has clarified we can use third party devices, and even embraced the Nexus One. However, people who are not using a subsidized device should be paying a lower fee [rogers can use its position as a hardware purveyor more competitively and progressively]

Finally, I would like a "my profile" link on this site so I can find all postings I've made, and see others' profiles. Several postings I made haven't shown up after a week.

<blockquote>But the cold and dark winters mean that we spend a lot of time online – 75% of the population have broadband access at home. It used to mean that we read a lot, but now I think a lot of that time is spent online. Since we spend a lot of time indoors, it shouldn’t be surprising that we have the world record in electricity usage, all of it produced by the clean renewable energy resources that we enjoy up here. And everyone has a mobile. So we are really well connected. Which means that you shouldn’t be surprised that online gaming is a factor here – just witness – EVE Online - http://www.eve-online.com/ an Icelandic online game.
...
What you may not know is that we have the highest use of anti-depressants in Europe (possibly in the world) and it may just be that natural selection took care of those that couldn’t stand the cold and dark winters. The winters also go a long way to explain why there’s a thriving nightlife in Reykjavik.</blockquote>

which doesn't agree with http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seasonal_affective_disorder#Nordic_countries

<blockquote>Iceland, however, seems to be an exception. A study of more than 2000 people there found the prevalence of seasonal affective disorder and seasonal changes in anxiety and depression to be unexpectedly low in both sexes. ... It has more recently been suggested that this may be attributed to the large amount of fish traditionally eaten by Icelandic people, 225 lb per person per year as opposed to about 50 in the US and Canada, rather than to genetics.

http://www.idlewords.com/2003/11/a_morning_in_iceland.htm

<blockquote>If you are flying to Europe for any reason, you would be silly not to check out Iceland Air. Just like Vegas, where they make layovers longer to maximize passenger gambling, Iceland Air tries to give you long enough between planes to zip over to the Blue Lagoon (my nine-hour layover was an unusually long exception), and the tour staff is used to whisking passengers there and back between flights. It costs a whopping $25, on top of the $304 (all taxes included) I paid for a round trip ticket between Boston and Amsterdam. Instead of spending eight hours in a plane, you can have two shorter flights with a hot bath in between, you can see Iceland, and you can arrive in Europe in the early evening, just in time to check in for a good night's sleep. </blockquote>

<blockquote>After a detailed discussion with Bragi, it does seem possible that we could actually do the Ring Road in 6 days. We could start by repeating the trip he and I did, by stopping at those waterfalls on the way to the guesthouse near jokulsarlon, and spend the night there. The 2nd day, we could spend a couple hours at jokulsarlon and the adjacent black sand beach (both of which are incredible), before driving up to Myvatn and getting there at night. Then we could spend a couple more nights there, checking out Myvatn and also Krafla, a lava field just 25 km north, and if the weather's OK we could hike up to the volcano crater lake there. We could spend the 5th night in Akureyri, which is just 100 km west of Myvatn. And then the next day we could spend some time in Akureyri before driving back to Reykjavik.</blockquote>

oops.. updated with...

<blockquote>
Well first let me correct myself, Bragi just called to
inform me that I misunderstood him on one thing. The
drive from Jokulsarlon to Myvatn could not be done in
one day, we'd have to stop at Egilstadir for a night.
So minus one night from Myvatn for sure. But since I
found out I can add another night to the trip, it
could be a wash as far as Myvatn goes, unless we
decide to use that extra time to go to Gullfoss and
There is a hotel in Grundarfjörður if you plan on doing some sight-seeing in Snæfellsness (2 hours from Reykjavík) to see Snæfellsjökull and other sites in the area.

The employees and owners of both the hostel and hotel speak English and have great knowledge of the things to see and do in Snæfellsness. Have fun and keep your fingers crossed for excellent weather!!
= Using Wikis in organizations =

== What is a wiki ==

Hawaiian for "quick."

Classically - A wiki (pronounced /ˈwɪki/ WIK-ee) is a website that allows the easy creation and editing of any number of interlinked web pages via a web browser using a simplified markup language. ([http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki Wikipedia]).

The simplified markup focuses on the simplest ways to create meaningful formatting and navigation. While the markup is designed so anyone can start with basic editing, it's still a major stumbling block to newcomers.

Usually wikis have a simple access model - the site is completely open for editing, some pages or locked, or the entire site is only available for writing and/or reading to a restricted group.

Culturally wikis try to emphasize the same level of access for everyone, though practically some levels of administration are required.

Wiki features are starting to merge with web-based content management systems to support features such as fine grained editing and access permissions and rich editors.

== Where do they come from? ==

* Hypertext 1950s - 70s - Microfiche, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_Engelbart (Computer mouse, Hypertext, Groupware, Interactive Computing)
* Hypertext 1990s - the web

* Culture - view source - http://www.whitehouse.gov/ (well designed) links to other media
* Transparency, open source & reusable data (web browsers & servers)
* Mass involvement
* Computer culture, facebook &c - http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=37403547074&ref=nf

* Wiki like systems predate wikipedia hgttg, everything

== Visualizations ==

* Vandalfighter / Beren
* Touchgraph

* http://www.akamai.com/html/technology/visualizing_akamai.html
* http://labs.digg.com/stack/
* http://labs.digg.com/swarm/

== Problems solved ==

* Reference
* Codeveloped documentation - definitions
* Personal or workgroup notes/database
* Knowledge management (using categories)
* Share organized info without blasting everyone
* Message of openness - creative commons

== Quotes about wikis ==

'''Stefan comments:'''
* a wiki is like play-doh or paper and you can make anything out of it. With a few formatting conventions i've seen wikis used for documentation, task and TODO lists, planning and timelines, bug tracking, tracking physical resources (where is this piece of equipment and has it been paid for yet) and customer relations

* it's faster and easier and safer than emailing around a bunch of word documents with "track changes" turned on

'''Helen comments:'''

* What makes me a Wiki enthusiast after tonight, however, is that I've now seen how wikis enable the management & generation of knowledge, and the planning & generation of work. Specifically, I think it's incredible that with wikis (or at least this particular wiki software), you are expected to generate the title (reference) for a link BEFORE you generate the content for the link. So if I'm tackling a multidimensional beast, even just a complicated grant, I can start with the main text, and put in links to appendix documents without having those documents in existence yet. In other words, it's a conceptual approach -- I LIKE!!

== Compared to other applications ==

* More generalizable, less rigid
* Not really for communications (but see Blikis)
* With semantic wikis, they will become more like applications

== How do they work ==

* Rows and columns, relational databases vs hypertext and wikis
* Easy editing, on the spot
** Simple syntax, typically no rich text editor
* Typically write-able by anyone
* Full history is always there, can revert
* Use discussion tab for comments and questions

== Creating a page ==

* From main – a few links per page
* Keep each major topic on its own page, or move to one when its time
* When editing other's work, be considerate of what they were trying to say

=== Hands on ===

* Create an account
* Create your user page with a heading and a link
* Fill in the link

== Issues ==

* Not everyone has access to a computer / is comfortable using a wiki
** Summaries
** Currently don't compare to more specialized apps
** Different workflows for different people -storyteller, coder
* Making information available
** NPOV, substantiated
** Culture is changing to be more critical, expect more
* Different wikis are better at different tasks
* Flagged revisions - editor culture
* Sometimes experimental, community involvement doesn't work

== Types of Wikis ==

* Personal wiki (tiddly, bliki)
* Workgroup/intranet/project – third party and self hosted - http://www.semanticweb.com/article.php/3787986
* Public, unique topic focused
* Public, general topic
* Wikipedia
== Mediawiki ==

* Same software as used by Mediawiki, probably millions of other sites
* Well tested
* Well established bot programming interface
* Hundreds of useful extensions
* Not meant to be a CMS

=== Hands on ===

* Put yourself in the Person category
* Add your birth date
* Add your postal code
* Add your favourite colour
* Views

=== Tasks easy to hard ===

* Use a todo annotation, view it in a query.
* Add the same interests as other people on user page, view on a graph
* Create a class with form and template using the Special page.
* Use a [http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Semantic_Internal_Objects semantic internal object].

== Problems solved ==

* Databases with finely and arbitrarily defined data, with forms and querying
* self contained applications like [http://www.placeography.org/index.php/Bridge_Trail_Walking_Tour mapping], [http://wiki.creativecommons.org/CcTeamspace task tracking], [http://ced.zooid.org/wiki/Social_orgs_graph_(sandbox) diagramming] with fine grained data integration between "apps"
* Connecting with other systems using semantic web standards

== Using Semantic Mediawiki practically in organizations ==

* Start slow - use it for particular projects
** Good as general web site
*** Restrict access unless the project is about open access
** internal documentation, public development
* Make sure there are helpers and champions ready to 'garden' quickly, or use an extension like Flagged Revisions
* Use forms to make common tasks easier
* Always update documentation on the wiki rather than repeating
* Can always use other SMW sites as examples since their code is completely open, even locked pages

== Developing uses ==

* Interface to mail, IM, twitter, etc - send a page update, todo or queries
* Interface to other systems using PHP, bots, XML, RDF

== Applications for organizations ==

* Neighborhood knowledge - http://www.placeography.org/index.php/Bridge_Trail_Walking_Tour - add arbitrary knowledge
* Workgroup practices
* Codifying co-developed knowledge, getting people up to speed
* Analysis, references
* Link to other groups

=== Encouraging wiki use in organizations ===

* Introduce progressively, encouraging the idea of progressive learning
** start with why wikis, wikipedia, the culture of wikis
** good uses
*** sketch out idea with links
*** page management
** show a few good sites - wikipedia
** create account
** edit home page, add headings, lists, a link
** demonstration of formatting/layout, common.css
** emphasize looking at markup examples
** introduce idea of semantic, distinct content, resuse
** few good sites - placeography, discoursedb
** simple example of semantic use - birthday, show on timeline
** simple example of a class - todo
** facet search, narrowing down, copy and paste

* Find out what their real problems are
* find champions
* break wikis into sites "owned" by different people/communities
* Ease of hosting
* Don't pretend wiki can do everything, don't oversell
* Alternative to uploading document - good summary, link to original

==== Key concepts ====

* play-doh - for wikis
* structured
* wikipedia - well known
* built on mediawiki, millions of sites, thousands of extensions
* emphasize control - no database management, open source, users can create data or can lock it down, import and export data
* good opportunity to introduce and encourage adoption of creative commons

==== Challenges ====

* Working with conservative top level management
** "this is already happening" - examples
* gaining critical mass

== Data design ==

http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Semantic_Forms#Data_design_issues

- Create a top category for Semantic Classes. I called mine 'Categories'.
It holds only categories used to define a 'Is-a' relationship. Doing so has
at least two benefits : 1- You can do a query on your core content by
restricting it to the 'Categories' level. 2- You can define other
categories outside of that structure for whatever your system needs.

http://smwforum.ontoprise.com/smwforum/index.php/Example:How_to_realize_a_range_constraint_for_a_property

Redirects can be used to create property synonyms.

== Discussion ==

Categories can be hierarchical; properties can't (yet) - actually they can be, using subproperty of.

When to use categories vs properties?

== MW tricks ==

If you want to clear out old pages you can delete them and use

=== Variables ===

You can make use of the VariablesExtension [1] and store the query (or its
result? I'd like to know which one, but in the end it doesn't really matter) in
a variable, which is helpful when you need the same query multiple times within
a page. It looks like this:

<nowiki>{{ #vardefine: some_variable_name | {{#show:{{PAGENAME}}| ?propertyname}} }}
(silent) or
{{ #vardefineecho: some_variable_name | {{#show:{{PAGENAME}}| ?propertyname}} }} (with output)</nowiki>

Further down in the page you can write

<nowiki>{{ #var: some_variable_name }}</nowiki>

=== Specific searches ===

<nowiki>
<inputbox>
type=search
width=30
namespaces=Help**,Wikipedia**,Template**
searchbuttonlabel=Search help pages
bgcolor=#cee0f2
break=no
</inputbox>
</nowiki>

(requires the Input Box extension)
=== Remote data ===

Philipp writes:

if you want to query an SMW installation from remote and re-use the results in
other applications, I recommend checking out our [http://smwforum.ontoprise.com/smwforum/index.php/Help:Basic_Triplestore Triplestore Connector]. It delivers the results as XML format (compliant with the SPARQL recommendation).

If you want to query semantic data in your wiki, coming from another SMW
installation you should take a further look at the [http://projects.csail.mit.edu/wibit/wiki/index.php?title=Wibit Exhibit result printer].

=== Hiding set data ===

<nowiki>[[propertyA::{{{propertyA|}}}|]]</nowiki>

By adding the | after the enclosing }}}, the property value will not show.

For multi value properties:

<nowiki>{{#arraymap:{{{Eating disorders behaviors|}}}|,|x|[[Eating disorders behaviors::x|:x]]}}</nowiki>

(why not just use #set?)

=== Protecting #ask results ===

(from Markus Kr?tzsch)

* make a new property "has checked" of type page,
* make and a new page "main page news editor" (or whatever) and protect this page just like your main page,
* add an entry <nowiki>[[has checked::some page]]</nowiki> on "main page news editor" for every page that the editor has found to be okay to make it on the main page news feed,
* extend your #ask query on the main page with the condition <nowiki>[[-has
checked::main page news editor]]</nowiki>.

... Note that you can also have a group of editors with separate (protected)
pages. You can also work with categories of editors for different topics etc.
Of course, this is no longer a spam protection since categories are not
protected either, but you can use another level of "has checked" to have a
master editor who checks other editors to grant them trust. All of this
readily works with subqueries+inverses. Applying similar methods but without
actually protecting any pages maybe still be useful for managing feeds
together in cases where spam is not a major issue.

== Multi language SMW ==

=== Creationwiki ===

(From Temlakos on the mailing list regarding http://creationwiki.org/ and http://creationwiki.org/fr/)

Here's how I do it: As I have said many times before, I routinely
declare all properties. And every declaration that is implemented in
both languages, has the language-specific Interwiki prefix added, so
that you can follow a property declaration from one language to the
other and back.

All that is involved is making parallel property declarations and
placing Interwiki language links in each one.

In general: a multilingual wiki is actually a family of wikis, each set
up in its own language.

The important part is to make sure that the SMW language files exist in
each language in which you are planning to implement SMW. Right now the
language support is a little thin, in comparison to the incredible
multiplicity of languages on Wikipedia. So those of you who are trying
to persuade Wikipedia to implement SMW across their project will have an
immediate problem: you don't support more than a handful of the
languages they use.

...
anyone who implements SMW in an unsupported language is going to have to
write a language file. And make sure that his language is supported in
SMW_Aliases.php and SMW_Messages.php.

=== HKp wiki ===

'HKp wiki' is a bilingual (potentially multilingual) spanish-catalan
wiki in the same installation.
http://enlloc.net/hkp/w

I'm using Polyglot extension [1] to redirect to appropriate language
pages depending on the browser language settings or the user wiki
settings.

I'm using Language Selector extension for providing a language
selector for every page in the sidebar.

I wanted to use the Multilang extension for changing the language in
pages and forms depending on the user settings. But unfortunately this
extension don't work in MW higher of 1.10.

Alternatively I'm using the [http://enlloc.net/hkp/w/index.php/Plantilla:International <nowiki>{{international}}nowiki> template]. It is useful
for pages and templates but not for forms because it need a
<nowiki>{{SUBPAGENAME}}</nowiki> with language code (/ca, /es, /en, /fr, /pt, ...).

I'm using [http://enlloc.net/hkp/w/index.php/Plantilla:Entrada_Wlog my own code in templates] to show or hide a "translation
button" depending if the translation page exist or not:

<nowiki>{{#ifeq:{{SUBPAGENAME}}|es|
{{exists | page={{NAMESPACE}}:{{BASEPAGENAME}}/ca | then= | else=
<p style="margin-top:2em; color: rgb(100, 100, 100)">'''Traducci?n'''<br>[[Categoria:Per traduir al Castell?]]
<small>Esta p?gina a?n no est? en catal?n. Quieres colaborar a traducirla?</small></p>
{{#formlink:Entrada Wlog traduir ca|Traducir al catal?n|button|
preload={{FULLPAGENAME}}&Gesti? traduccions[p?gina
original]={{BASEPAGENAME}}&Entrada Wlog[llengua entrada]=es&namespace=Wlog }}
}}
}}</nowiki>

Right now I have not solution for having only one form for all
languages. What is annoying.
