Anyone else really tired of commercially oriented tech blogs focused on hoarding and not cultivating information (mobilesyrup wouldn't even post a friendly link to this page), and being uncritical, they're compromised too. Wordpress is like Barbie's Kitchen. You get a kit that lets you do what it shows on the box... blogs, RSS feeds, blog management, with extensions you can create maps, events, and so on.

[http://www.semantic-mediawiki.org Semantic Mediawiki] (SMW) is like Lego blocks. You can combine the basic blocks to make just about any shape, with extensions you can create your own content types, special views and functions.

Wordpress is easier to use (except when it comes to quick hypertext editing, where wikis, after a quick introduction, rule). But with SMW, you can recreate most typical functions, and also recombine pieces. You can take the pieces of a "table" (a map location embedded in a page) and make a mosaic (a collection of map locations about a topic). The SMW approach is less rounded, but you can re-use the pieces and constantly build on your knowledge.

This is a characteristic of semantic sites. Each piece of content is well defined and re-usable. Also like Lego blocks, the design is evident, transparent and open (in SMW, using [[Special:Version]] and change histories).

Wordpress supports some semantic features now, but I prefer the "Lego" approach, where people can more easily create different components, without resorting to a complex and difficult to maintain low level language.

There is more and more re-usable content and components on the Web; [http://simile.mit.edu MIT's SIMILE project] was created to make it easy to embed interactive views across sites and is supported by SMW and Wordpress, Microformats and RDFa make it possible to aggregate content in one place, whether it's restaurant reviews or departmental budgets.

SMW can support these functions for any site user, in a culture of transparently exchanging knowledge, but users have to learn the markup, which at times is not easy. A SMW site is best represented by a collection of people, some of whom are expert helpers.

WHAT YOU NEED

2 medium eggplants (about 2 pounds)

3 medium to large semi-ripe papayas (about 21/4 pounds)

1/2 cup canola oil

2 very large onions, in 11/2-inch dice (about 11/2 pounds)

3 large ripened tomatoes, in 11/2-inch dice (1 pound)

11/2 tablespoons ground cumin

1/2 teaspoon turmeric

1 teaspoon ground fenugreek seeds

1 large jalapeno pepper, chopped

11/2 tablespoons salt

2 cups black chickpea curry

1 cup chopped cilantro

11/2 teaspoons dried mint leaves (optional)

WHAT YOU DO

Preheat the oven to 450 F. Wrap eggplants and papayas individually in aluminum foil. Place them on a baking tray. Since the papayas will cook faster, place them in the front so you can easily remove them from the oven. Bake papayas for 30 minutes, then remove from the oven and allow them to cool. Continue baking eggplants for one hour more or until they are very soft. The eggplants will become mushy and deflated. Remove eggplants from the oven and cool so you can unwrap the aluminum foil.

Using a vegetable peeler or paring knife, peel papayas and discard the skin. Cut papayas in half. With a spoon, scoop out seeds and discard. Purée papaya flesh in a food processor or finely mash with your hands.

Using a paring knife, peel skins off eggplants. Using a spoon, scrape off any eggplant stuck to the skins. Discard the skins. Coarsely chop eggplants and place in a mixing bowl, then, using your hands, roughly mash the eggplants. They will have nowhere near the smooth consistency of mashed potatoes; instead, there will be some chunks. (You can also place the whole eggplants on a large cutting board and dice them into ¼- to ½-inch pieces.)

Add the papaya purée to the eggplants and mix well. Set aside.

Heat oil in a large heavy frying pan on medium-high heat for one minute. Add onions and sauté until brown, about 15 minutes. Reduce the heat to medium and stir in tomatoes. Add cumin, turmeric, fenugreek, jalapeno pepper and salt. Cook for 10 minutes. Pour the eggplant and papaya mixture into the masala and stir well. Combine the eggplant and papaya curry with the black chickpea curry and heat on medium for five to 10 minutes or until the mixture is gently boiling. Stir in the chopped cilantro just as you turn off the heat.

Present this curry on six plates with chapatis. Sprinkle with dried mint.

Serves 6 to 8

I am writing because I am very confused by Fido's plans and have been trying to resolve a dispute. Please excuse my long note. But I would like to be assured a senior person will look at my issue.

I have been a Fido customer for about ten years, minus a brief gap when I travelled out of the country. I would estimate I have spent about $7 - $10k over the years on my two lines. I am a software developer working in the hospital system and develop mobile applications, so finding a good mobile carrier is very important to me.

I have not been a contract customer, rather going month to month. Fido over time has called me to offer incentives to go to a multi year plan, including free high end Windows Mobile devices. However, none were better than what I can purchase elsewhere, so did not interest me.

I accumulated 360 Fido dollars, and wanted to get an iPhone for my partner, which required signing up for a 3 year plan for her. I went into your flagship Montreal store. The sales person was helpful, but my thoughts about what I could with plans turned out totally wrong. I was in the store for two hours and it was very frustrating, and I ended up settling for what was not at all the preferred solution.

*I would have liked to purchase the iPhone for her, and keep using my current phone, a Nokia n95 (sold by Rogers), with the opportunity to upgrade my phone within the next year.* This was refused to me, and beyond that, I was forced to choose one of your phones. I was told I had to take this phone in order to utilise the unlimited surfing plan with my n95. This makes absolutely no sense to me, why would you make a customer, who already has a device they are happy with, take another phone they don't want to own? It makes no sense for Fido, myself, the environment, it is Kafka-esque. I am sure it is a case of a policy being followed by employees without any real chance for thought.

As I said, I have spent $7 - $10 000 at Fido, and I will be spending at least another $6 000 over the next three years if this can be worked out to my satisfaction. I do not understand why Fido, instead of forcing me to take a phone I do not want, cannot give me an opportunity to upgrade one of my lines in the next year. Surely Fido can see the value of a customer having reasonable flexibility while you're earning $6k of revenue.

The second best solution would be for me to use this forced purchased to buy an iPhone, but to use it on its own as an iPod/basic phone, and continue to use my n95 with Fido.

The third best solution would be for my girlfriend to go on her own phone line, and for me to stay month to month, with my n95 and the $15 value pack.

I would like to receive a response stating at the minimum a senior person has read and understood what I have had to go through, but it would be really nice if we could come to a more amenable, friendly solution for a dedicated customer.

Rogers made a vow to open up their support to 'social media' and post any reasonable comment. This is a very progressive position, but some comments don't seem to be making it through the moderation queue.

I realize (and it’s clear from the inclusion of statistics) that Rogers doesn’t need to focus on what any individual wants. But I don’t want just first run movies, trendy sports and series in an exclusive community, I want world scale choice and pricing with the knowledge and chaos of the Internet. I have yet to see any Rogers promotions that have been aimed at me, aside maybe from the initial “open,” “revolution” Android ads, which unfortunately proved rather false. While I am not included in “nearly 60 per cent of 18-34 year-old,” I am pretty sure the majority of people would simply like Roger to provide reliable, fast, competitive Internet service so we can choose from a global palette of options. Rogers should certainly participate in extra offerings, but not to the detriment to the bigger idea.

Alan - let me assure you, you don't need to step in and apologize on behalf of corporations. There's nothing, anywhere that says "consumer phones are meant to be locked down." That's more tenuous than Rogers' statement that their offering would be a "revolution" and "open." A statement that some of us would like them to follow up on, rather than making excuses on their behalf that accepts a dysfunctional status quo.

I have no desire to own the Nexus One as I want a keyboard device. Further, the formula doesn't make sense, since I'd be continuing to pay monthly subsidization fees to Rogers, effectively nearly paying double for my handset.

Please, unless you're going to say something useful, next time keep your thoughts to yourself. ;)

In an age of fast moving (especially the first generation — Dream/Magic — which most quickly became outdated), ever lower priced standard handsets, this is obviously something many people will want to do. Alternatively, what price discounts can we expect if we don't obtain a 'subsidized' handset from Rogers?

Is @RogersHelp going to do anything if my smartphone is stolen except explain I have to break my contract (around $300), create a new three year contract, and buy a new device (around $600) ?

I’d like to see Rogers simply offer replacement devices at a pro rated cost. If you say the device is worth $600, and it’s $200 up front, and you’re claiming I’m subsidizing the remainder over 36 months, I should be able to get a replacement for $332 after one year. That’s about what I’d pay to break the contract alone. Does this not sound fair to anyone?

And it does imply that those who get their own smartphone should be paying $11 less a month…

In case my comment isn't clear, let me explain...

A few months ago my wife's iPhone was stolen. It's from Fido, but please hold off on the Fido-isn't-Rogers macro, I think the story would be the same.

I called customer service and explained the situation. The rep I spoke to sounded like she'd never heard of anyone losing their phone before, as if everyone simply had their phones for three years and this was a very special circumstance. Her first proposal was crazy. We'd have to break the phone and data contracts, and lose our existing phone number. We'd have to buy a new iPhone for $600, including a $35 signup fee and lose our FidoDollars. Pretty much $1000. After three phone calls, we finally got it so we'd only need to cancel one plan for a $125 fee, not pay a signup fee, and pay $600 for a new phone, and use our FidoDollars to pay for most of that (thank goodness for Fido Dollars).

When I got the bill, it seems we were charged $300 for cancelling, but by then I was so damned tired of arguing and confused by all the different options I gave up. I sincerely hope that wasn't part of the plan.

What I'd like to see Rogers do is go for a simple, Really Real Reality option where for any reason I can sign on to MyAccount, click a button on the phone I want, and it will tell me how much I'll pay and/or how much my contract will be extended, given the system knows the terms of my account. This will eliminate all the confusion, including the unfairness associated with special deals people sometimes seem to get, and avoid the confusion that often ensues when speaking with a rep

Rogers is making a brave and smart move with this service, hopefully toward getting to the bottom of what we all want, healthy competitive service focused on true Internet access, with worthwhile Rogers offers layered on top. Many homes are, like mine, spending around $8000 over three years on Rogers wireless. For this price we should expect quite a bit. [Rogers is in a tough position because Internet is something that could and should be freely distributed]

With social media comes the hope relationships can be formed. Even if we don't remember a name or avatar, history is just a click away and hopefully we can avoid seeing unhelpful canned responses, and this can be more of a conversation, and less disassociated blips.

I have been continually promoting a few themes —

* Rogers [and HTC] made a mistake with the Dream's inability to upgrade and the Magic offer was not an adequate response [for many Dream purchasers]
* customers should be able to more easily replace or upgrade devices purchased through Rogers without having to go through bizarre 'contract cancellation' contortions. ideally, within a few clicks through their myRogers account
* It's good Rogers has clarified we can use third party devices, and even embraced the Nexus One. However, people who are not using a subsidized device should be paying a lower fee [rogers can use its position as a hardware purveyor more competitively and progressively]

Finally, I would like a "my profile" link on this site so I can find all postings I've made, and see others' profiles. Several postings I made haven't shown up after a week.

pages. You can also work with categories of editors for different topics etc.
Of course, this is no longer a spam protection since categories are not
protected either, but you can use another level of "has checked" to have a
master editor who checks other editors to grant them trust. All of this
readily works with subqueries+inverses. Applying similar methods but without
actually protecting any pages maybe still be useful for managing feeds
together in cases where spam is not a major issue.

Here's how I do it: As I have said many times before, I routinely
declare all properties. And every declaration that is implemented in
both languages, has the language-specific Interwiki prefix added, so
that you can follow a property declaration from one language to the
other and back.

All that is involved is making parallel property declarations and
placing Interwiki language links in each one.

In general: a multilingual wiki is actually a family of wikis, each set
up in its own language.

The important part is to make sure that the SMW language files exist in
each language in which you are planning to implement SMW. Right now the
language support is a little thin, in comparison to the incredible
multiplicity of languages on Wikipedia. So those of you who are trying
to persuade Wikipedia to implement SMW across their project will have an
immediate problem: you don't support more than a handful of the
languages they use.

write a language file. And make sure that his language is supported in

I'm using Polyglot extension [1] to redirect to appropriate language
pages depending on the browser language settings or the user wiki
settings.

I'm using Language Selector extension for providing a language
selector for every page in the sidebar.

I wanted to use the Multilang extension for changing the language in
pages and forms depending on the user settings. But unfortunately this
extension don't work in MW higher of 1.10.

Alternatively I'm using the [http://enlloc.net/hkp/w/index.php/Plantilla:International <nowiki>{{international}}nowiki> template]. It is useful
for pages and templates but not for forms because it need a
<nowiki>{{SUBPAGENAME}}</nowiki> with language code (/ca, /es, /en, /fr, /pt, ...).

I'm using [http://enlloc.net/hkp/w/index.php/Plantilla:Entrada_Wlog my own code in templates] to show or hide a "translation
button" depending if the translation page exist or not:
